Clean Energy Collective (CEC), the nation’s leading Community Solar developer, is experiencing significant growth thanks to the company’s dynamic and dedicated leadership. CEC has grown from 10 employees in 2012 to 70 full-time team members in 2014 who are passionate about making solar energy available and affordable to all.
Paul Spencer  -  President and Founder
In addition to inventing CEC’s community solar concept, Mr. Spencer leads the company’s ongoing vision and execution. He is a serial entrepreneur, having built 10 companies in the last 22 years within various industries including energy, software, systems engineering, medical, brokerage and real estate development. He has also held management positions for Qwest as the Director of Business Development for a 14-state southeast region and a VP of Sales for First Consulting Group (now CSC). Mr. Spencer has received a patent for past designs and hundreds of copyrights. He lives off the grid in a self-sustaining home with his wife, has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and is the president of the board of Tom's Door, a local non-profit. He enjoys the outdoors, skiing and playing basketball.
Mark Boyer  -  Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Boyer oversees the day-to-day operations and financial aspects of CEC. Prior to his tenure with CEC, he was founder and president of The Willits Group, a full service real estate company; he was a development manager and partner for Val Quest Construction and GrayMac Properties in Boston; and he was a project manager for Flatiron Structures. His interest in the energy business began while working to purchase several micro-hydro plants for The Willits Group portfolio. Through this process, Mark began sharing ideas with his life-long friend, Paul Spencer, and moved back to his home state of Colorado to join him in building Clean Energy Collective. Mr. Boyer received his BS in Civil Engineering and his Master of Science in Development and Finance.
Bart Rupert  -  Chief Management Officer
Bart Rupert is responsible for growing CEC’s community solar portfolio through strategic partnerships, business development initiatives, and alliances with utility companies. He also oversees the execution and delivery of these projects at the executive level. Bart has a solid track record of creating growth and success. He previously served as the COO of Plexis Healthcare Systems where the company grew through strategic alliances with large companies such as Accenture, CSC, Cognizant, Noridian, WNS, etc. and became one of Microsoft’s HHS Strategic Alliance partners. Prior to Plexis, he served as the COO of Crib Notes Software, a niche EMR company, cultivating the organization into an internationally-recognized market leader. Bart also worked with large industry players including HBOC, McKesson, and FCG in various leadership roles.
Tom Sweeney  -  Chief Operating Officer
Tom Sweeney brings a wealth of experience to CEC in the development and management of high growth businesses with ground breaking products and services. Most recently, Tom was the founder, Chairman and CEO of Incentra Solutions, a $200 million IT Systems Integrator for mid-tier enterprise clients in the US and Western Europe. Prior to Incentra, Tom lead a series of IT services and software companies in the US, Europe and Asia/Pac. Sweeney started his career in the Telecommunications industry and worked as a senior executive at Level 3, Worldcom, MFS, Centex and MCI. Outside of work Tom enjoys golf, blue water sailing and spending time with his wife and two sons.
Sam Cunningham  -  Senior VP & General Counsel
With over 20 years business and legal experience is the sustainable energy field, Mr. Cunningham is responsible for overseeing the legal aspects of the company. His background is diverse, also including significant energy services, real estate, engineering & construction, lending, acquisitions and sales experience. He has also owned and operated several successful start-up and high-growth businesses, and successfully combines an entrepreneurial mindset with sound legal practices. Mr. Cunningham enjoys exploring the Colorado mountains, and has been known to head to sunny beaches in the winter for a scuba break.
Don Munroe  -  Senior VP Information Technology
Mr. Munroe has over 20 years of software development and IT experience. His past endeavors include the development and deployment of complex software platforms for various industries including healthcare, retail sales, entertainment, publishing, automotive and logistics. Mr. Munroe’s expertise in n-tier, mobile and web architectures are leveraged in creating and maintaining CEC’s proprietary RemoteMeter platform.
Jim Hartman  -  VP Strategic Development
Jim Hartman received his architectural degree from the University of Virginia in 1980. Mr. Hartman worked for 16 years as the Historic Projects Director and a Senior Associate at the internationally acclaimed architectural firm of Fentress Bradburn Architects. In 1996, Mr. Hartman joined the National Properties Group as their Vice President of Design and Construction and was in charge of several multi-million real estate developments. In 2000, Mr. Hartman began Hartman Ely Investments (HEI), a firm that is passionate about sustainable communities, energy efficient development and renewable energy. Over 11 years, HEI has created several award-winning, energy efficient real estate developments. The most notable of those are the LEED Platinum headquarters office building for Total Longterm Care, as well as the Hangar 2 Redevelopment, both at the Lowry Community in Denver, Colorado. HEI was also the Development Manager for the 1 megawatt solar farm at the Boulder Wastewater Treatment Facility. Jim joined the Clean Energy Collective in 2011 to help bring clean solar power and energy efficiency programs to communities across the United States and overseas.
Tom Hunt  -  VP of Corporate Development
Tom Hunt brings a broad background in energy markets, policy, and technology to the Corporate Development department at CEC. Previously he was the Senior Policy Advisor for the Colorado Governor's Energy Office under Governor John Hickenlooper. Before working on energy policy he worked on energy production as a chemist researching biofuels synthesis methods. He has graduate degrees in energy economics from Colorado School of Mines and the Institut Francais du Petrole and a B.S. in biochemistry from Washington and Lee University. He lives in Denver with his wife and daughter and listens to bluegrass music, serves on the leadership board of his church, and enjoys Colorado’s many outdoor activities.
Jeff Lord  -  VP of Project Development
Jeff Lord has spent his entire 28 year career in the energy and telecommunications industries, split evenly between utilities and non-utilities. A veteran of several start-ups as well as Fortune 500 firms, Jeff’s specialty has been bringing high-growth products and services to traditional utility markets. Jeff has worked exclusively in solar energy since 2009 and has developed more than 50MW of projects from coast-to-coast. Most recently, he co-founded Green States Energy, Inc. which owns and operates more than 30 utility-scale solar PV facilities in 5 states. Jeff lives in Connecticut where he is also active in animal rescue work and enjoys riding horses and playing ice hockey.
Mike Malone  -  VP of Sales
Mr. Malone has more than 25 years of progressive international sales management, marketing, start-up, turn-around and supply chain management experience. Mr. Malone has responsibility at CEC for the sales team. In his previous employment, Mr. Malone was the Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Crestron, a $500 million manufacturer of commercial and residential control equipment; the Vice President and General Manager of SupplyFORCE.com, where he led a multidisciplinary marketing and technology team; and he spent 10+ years with Rockwell Automation, where he held key management positions. During his career, Mike has also held sales and management positions with Texas Instruments and Eaton Corporation. Mr. Malone received his BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science Minor and his MBA with Marketing and International Business emphasis in a joint degree program.
Dan McIlroy  -  VP of Business Development
Dan McIlroy is responsible for the Rocky Mountain and Central Region of the US. Dan brings 20+ years of sales and business development. He started his career in London as a reinsurance broker and eventually transferring to New York and San Francisco. His experience also includes software sales with Oracle and a strategic partner and most recently business development in commercial real estate. Dan holds a BA from the University of Colorado.
Jeff Hudson  -  VP of Business Development
As Vice President of the Southeast Region, Jeff brings CEC 25+ years of experience developing strategic partnerships and generating new business. Previously, Jeff served as Vice President of Froehling & Robertson, Inc. concentrating on environmental and utility related issues. He also founded and served as Executive Vice President of F&R Worldwide, an international consulting & engineering firm operating primarily in the oil and gas and renewable energy sectors. Jeff spent significant time working internationally building strategic partnerships and nurturing new relationships with firms operating in the energy sector.
Gary Waterhouse  -  VP Business Development
Gary Waterhouse is CEC’s Vice President of Business Development for the central region of the US. He brings 25+ years of management experience leading business development, corporate growth, and strategic partnership initiatives. Gary served as Senior Vice President, Corporate Development at Amkor Technology for 10+ years and has held key management positions with international organizations such as Tessera, Texas Instruments and Johnson Matthey leading the development of innovative products and services in the semiconductor manufacturing and materials technology development industries. He holds a B.Sc. in Metallurgy and an M.A. in Organizational Management.
Ron Wedeking  -  VP of Developer Relations
Ron Wedeking brings over 30 years of business experience to CEC with companies such as NCH Corporation, Akzo Nobel and Veolia Water as well as smaller start-up companies in construction and energy. Since 2009 Ron has worked in the solar energy sector and has led sales efforts in Oregon, California and the Northeast. To date, Ron and his teams have been responsible for over 40 MW of PV solar installations. A graduate of Northwest University in Kirkland, Washington with a BA in Literature and Greek, Ron resides in New Hampshire and enjoys living where history was and is still made. A fan of the arts and music, Ron also enjoys travel.
Natasha Cohen  -  Director of Inside Sales
Bringing in years of experience in call center sales, customer service and operations, Natasha Cohen is responsible for overseeing the Inside Sales Department at CEC. Prior to joining CEC, Ms. Cohen ran a successful virtual call center, staffing over 1,400 sales, customer service, and technical support representatives to support Fortune 500 companies. Ms. Cohen also worked for multibillion dollar organizations such as Scholastic, overseeing ecommerce initiatives, sales, and customer service, as well as Best Buy's business sales. In her spare time, Ms. Cohen enjoys watching stage theatre productions, being outdoors, traveling, and baking goodies.
